Start with your number of nights

Two nights is the honest minimum: San Marco and the Grand Canal on one day, the quiet sestieri, Cannaregio, Castello and Dorsoduro, on the other. Three nights adds Murano and Burano or a day in Padova or Verona. Longer than that, Venice becomes your base for the Veneto and the lakes, or the first stop of a route to Florence, two hours away by fast train.

Two timed entries, secured first

The Doge Palace is a timed entry; at St Mark Basilica the timed slot is what lets you skip the line around the square. Both are official tickets at face price, booked for your exact dates.

The right arrival

Private water taxi to the hotel, the Alilaguna boat, or a car to Piazzale Roma: chosen for luggage, budget and where the hotel sits. Trains are booked to Venezia Santa Lucia, on the lagoon, not Venezia Mestre on the mainland.

Calendar checked

Acqua alta is mostly October to December and lasts a few hours at a time. Since 2024 Venice charges a small access fee to day visitors on peak dates; overnight guests are exempt but must register. We handle the calendar and the paperwork.
