Where should I stay in Paris for the first time?
First-time visitors do best in a central arrondissement within walking distance of the main sights: the 1st (Louvre), the 4th and 3rd (Le Marais), the 5th (Latin Quarter) or the 6th (Saint-Germain). These put you near the Seine, the museums and excellent dining, with strong métro links.
What is the best arrondissement to stay in Paris?
There is no single best, but the most-loved bases are Le Marais (3rd/4th) for central energy and food, Saint-Germain (6th) for classic chic, the Latin Quarter (5th) for value and charm, and the 1st for first-timers who want everything on foot. Trendier travellers love Canal Saint-Martin (10th/11th).
Which areas of Paris should I avoid staying in?
Most central arrondissements are pleasant. Many travellers prefer to avoid areas right around the main train stations (parts of the 18th near Gare du Nord, and the immediate station surroundings) and the business district at La Défense, which is outside the city. Staying in the central 1st-8th and the Marais, Latin Quarter or Saint-Germain keeps you well placed.
