The coast has a season, not just a climate

The Amalfi Coast works on a clear seasonal rhythm. Many hotels, restaurants and beach clubs close for several winter months, and the seasonal ferries that link the towns usually run from spring to the end of October. Outside that window, a lovely hotel may simply not be open. Confirm opening dates before you fall in love with a property.

Getting around changes with the month

In season, ferries between Salerno, Amalfi and Positano are often the most pleasant way to move, and they avoid the winding coastal road. The regional buses run year-round but fill up in summer. A private driver is comfortable but still subject to summer traffic. Leave margins between a boat or a bus and any fixed booking.

Summer needs a different daily rhythm

In July and August, plan the sea for the middle of the day and keep walks, towns and viewpoints for the morning and evening. Steps and hills are constant on this coast, so heat matters more than on a flat city trip. Ask your hotel about air conditioning and how many steps separate it from the road.

Choose your base with the season

Positano and Amalfi are the classic bases in season. Ravello is higher, quieter and cooler in summer. Out of season, Sorrento or Salerno can be more practical, with more places open and easier connections. Choose the town for the month, not only for the photographs.

Is the Amalfi Coast worth visiting in winter?
