How do I avoid ticket mistakes and fines on the Paris Metro and RER?
Buy the right ticket for your journey, validate it as required, and keep the same card or phone available until you leave the network. A payment receipt alone is not a validated ticket. If you receive a notice, check the named operator and its official payment or dispute process.
Before entering: four checks
- Check the actual origin and destination, especially an airport station.
- Check what your ticket or pass covers instead of assuming every product works everywhere.
- Make sure each traveler can present their own valid support.
- Validate as required before proceeding, then keep the support available.
RATP’s travel-in-good-standing guidance distinguishes holding a ticket from meeting its conditions. If a gate or reader does not work, ask staff for assistance rather than following someone else through and assuming the problem is resolved.
CDG and Orly: do not assume a city ticket is enough
The Paris Region <> Airports ticket costs €14 at full fare in 2026 for its covered airport rail journeys. A pass may include airport access under its own conditions; check the product before buying. IDFM airport ticket information.
For travelers using Navigo Easy simultaneously, each needs their own card. Several airport tickets loaded on one card cannot serve a whole group traveling together. Airport ticket conditions.
Before the trip, decide which adult is responsible for each child’s support and any evidence needed for a reduced fare. Keep the product information with your planning notes, but remember that a screenshot of a purchase is not itself a substitute for the ticket.
What does a fine cost?
There is no single fine for every Metro, RER or train problem. The RATP’s table lists maxima of €70 for immediate payment and €120 for deferred payment for irregular travel, with a €180 increased fine in that category. Other infractions and exceptions have different amounts. These figures are not a universal SNCF or all-network tariff. Current RATP fine table.
Do not decide a notice is fake merely because its amount differs from a travel-forum example. Check the infraction, operator, date and payment stage. Equally, a message asking for money is not proof of a valid notice.
If you receive a notice
Keep the receipt or notice and the ticket-related records. Find the operator’s website independently. For RATP, use its official payment and dispute guidance; for a notice from another operator, follow that operator’s process. Check the applicable deadlines promptly rather than waiting until you are home.
A fine notice is not a replacement travel ticket. RATP explicitly says it does not allow you to continue traveling on the network. RATP notice guidance. Ask how to obtain the correct ticket for the rest of your journey.
This is a practical prevention checklist, not a promise that being unfamiliar with the system will cancel a fine. Explain a dispute with precise facts and supporting documents.
Separate honest rules from deception
A legitimate ticket check is not itself a tourist scam. For the other decisions that can catch travelers off guard, see Paris tourist scams and travel pitfalls. For arrival transport, compare the CDG taxi, rail and transfer options.

Related questions
Can several people use the same Navigo Easy card at once?
No. For the airport ticket, each person traveling at the same time needs a separate support. Several tickets on one card do not make it a group ticket.
Does paying for a ticket mean it is validated?
No. Complete the required validation with the correct card or phone and keep it available for checks and exit.
Are all RER fines issued under the same tariff?
Do not assume so. Check the operator named on the notice, the infraction and the payment stage, using that operator’s official information.
