How can I check a Paris apartment booking before sending money?
Verify the property and the person or company taking payment, read the full written offer, and check unexpected payment messages through your original booking account. A real reservation number in a message is not enough to establish who sent it.
Separate the property, the operator and the contract
For your shortlist, record the address or location information supplied, who manages the property, the stay dates and the full amount. Ask practical questions about access, bedrooms, elevator, stairs, heating or air-conditioning if these matter to your party. A beautiful photograph is not an answer about the apartment’s actual layout.
Compare the listing and images with independently found information. Identify the agency or operator before treating its correspondence as trustworthy. Cybermalveillance.gouv.fr recommends checking listings and the identity of an agency.
Those checks reduce uncertainty; they are not proof that a property is available to rent for your dates. Get the booking and conditions in writing.
An urgent payment message needs a separate check
If a message says your reservation will be canceled unless you pay through a new link, do not use the link to investigate. Open your usual booking app or type the known website address yourself. Compare the request with the reservation’s payment terms and contact support from that account.
The French government warns about messages impersonating accommodation providers after a booking. A message can sound convincing without being legitimate. Official guidance on booking-platform phishing.
Direct booking is a different situation
A direct reservation with a verified hotel, rental operator or travel company can legitimately have its own payment process. A bank transfer is not automatically a scam. What matters is verifying the payee, the contract and the agreed method independently, especially if the bank details change.
For a booking made through a platform, follow the process approved for that reservation. A surprise request to move payment elsewhere should be checked with the platform, not accepted merely because the message mentions your dates. Official rental-fraud precautions.
Keep one clear record of the total, deposit, remaining balance, due dates and cancellation terms. Do not mix an old quotation with a new set of payment instructions without confirming which applies.
If you already sent money or documents
Contact your bank promptly through a verified number, preserve messages and receipts, and report the incident to the booking platform if one was involved. The official rental-fraud response guide explains further reporting steps. Recovery is not guaranteed.
For exposed passwords, change them through the genuine service. Do not pay someone who appears afterward promising to recover the funds without first independently verifying who they are and what they propose.

Related questions
Is a bank transfer always a warning sign?
No. It can be an agreed method for a legitimate direct booking. Unexpected urgency, changed bank details and an unverified payee require separate checks.
Should I trust a message because it knows my travel dates?
Not on that basis alone. Open the original booking account independently and verify the request there.
