How much should you tip in Paris?
Service is already in the price, by law. Every French menu price includes a 15 percent service charge ("service compris"). Parisians leave nothing or round up a few euros for good service. Tipping 20 percent American-style is never expected, and marks the table as one that does not know.
The quick reference
Café or casual meal: round up, or leave 1-2 euros. Great dinner: 5-10 euros cash on the table is a warm gesture, not a duty. Taxis: round up. Hotel porters: 1-2 euros a bag. Private guides: the exception, 10-15 percent for a great day is customary. Nobody expects a percentage calculated on the bill.
Why the confusion exists
Some Paris servers in tourist zones have learned that Americans tip on reflex, and a few menus now show suggestive "tip lines" or hand over card machines with gratuity screens. You are watching an import aimed at you, not a French custom. Decline without guilt; the service charge is already paying the room.
Where generosity actually lands
Cash to a server who turned dinner into a memory, your guide after a day that flew by, the housekeeper's envelope at checkout: targeted, human, remembered. That is the French version, quality over arithmetic.
