Should I choose euros or dollars at Paris ATMs and card terminals?
Choosing euros leaves conversion to your card issuer under your card’s terms. Choosing dollars accepts the provider’s currency-conversion offer. Compare the terms rather than assuming either choice is fee-free, and check ATM charges separately from conversion.
There are three different costs to check
Think of a withdrawal as three questions: does the machine charge a withdrawal fee; what does your bank charge; and who converts the currency? A screen that resolves one question may not resolve the others.
Before leaving home, ask your issuer about international cash withdrawals, foreign-transaction charges and whether your card can be used abroad. Check spending and cash limits too. Banque de France’s foreign-currency guidance explains why account terms matter.
At the payment screen
Dynamic currency conversion, or DCC, offers a home-currency charge instead of the local-currency amount. Visa says the displayed offer should show both amounts, its exchange rate and any additional fees or markup, with a choice to accept or decline. Visa’s DCC explanation.
Read the wording rather than following the biggest or brightest button. If the choice is unclear, ask the merchant to show you the currency options before confirming. Declining the provider’s conversion is not the same as avoiding every bank charge.
At an ATM
Decide how much cash you actually need before using the machine. Read any withdrawal charge, then consider the conversion question separately. Cancel before confirmation if you do not understand the total or do not like the terms. A bank logo is not proof of a free withdrawal.
Keep the receipt long enough to compare it with your account. If the posted debit differs from what you understood, contact your issuer with the date, location and receipt. Do not ask a stranger beside the machine to take over your transaction.
At a currency-exchange counter
Ask one practical question: “For this amount of dollars, how many euros will I receive after all charges?” Compare that net result, not only a “no commission” sign or an attractive rate on a board. The cost can be reflected in the rate as well as a separate fee. Official foreign-currency guidance.
These checks do not establish a permanent cheapest operator or a universal best place to buy euros. Your card, the provider’s current offer and the amount involved change the comparison.
Keep payment decisions simple
Save your issuer’s verified support details and keep a backup payment method separately if you have one. For the broader travel checklist, read Paris tourist scams and pitfalls.

Related questions
Does declining conversion make an ATM withdrawal free?
No. The machine’s withdrawal charge and your bank’s fees may still apply. Review them separately.
Is every currency-conversion offer a scam?
No. It is a financial offer to assess. The important questions are whether its terms are clear and whether you choose to accept them.
