Canal Saint-Martin, a Self-Guided Paris Walk
2h15. 2.1 miles. From Place de la République to Parc de la Villette.
The canal is where young Paris hangs out: iron footbridges, tree-lined locks, indie shops and cafes, and a long easy waterside walk that ends in a huge modern park. No monuments, all atmosphere.
The local move
Come on a warm evening with a bottle and a baguette and sit on the cobbled canal edge with everyone else. This is the Parisian aperitif, no reservation, no terrace, just the water.
Best time to go
Late afternoon and evening, especially in summer. Sunday afternoons the lower quays go car-free.
When to avoid it
Cold or wet days lose the whole point; it's an outdoor, sit-by-the-water walk.
The stops
Place de la République
A vast pedestrian square around the statue of Marianne, the city's gathering point for everything from protests to picnics.
Tip: Cut across it toward rue du Faubourg du Temple to reach the canal in five minutes.
Canal Saint-Martin
A 19th-century canal with nine locks and elegant arched footbridges, the spine of the walk.
Tip: Cross back and forth on the green iron bridges; each gives a different postcard down the water.
Quai de Valmy
The west bank of the canal, lined with concept shops, coffee roasters and the boutique Hotel du Nord of film fame.
Tip: Browse the little shops and grab a specialty coffee. Hotel du Nord is a cafe now, good for a pause.
Point Éphémère
A former builders' depot turned canal-side arts venue, bar and terrace.
Tip: A good drink stop with a young crowd right on the water. Live music some evenings.
Bassin de la Villette
The canal widens into a broad basin with waterfront cafes, boat rentals and an open-air cinema in summer.
Tip: Rent a little electric boat for an hour, or just walk the wide quays. Petanque and paddleboards in season.
Parc de la Villette
A huge modern park of lawns, follies and the science museum, at the top of the canal.
Tip: A big open finish. In summer there's a free outdoor film festival on the great lawn.
