Walk from the village-like lanes of the Épinettes to Montmartre's less visited western slope, linking gardens, a romantic cemetery and discreet artists' streets without crossing northern Paris.
The local move
Start below the hill and climb gradually. This route deliberately avoids the Sacré-Cœur crowds and lets the residential side of Montmartre set the pace.

Cité des Fleurs
A long lane of small houses and front gardens preserves an unexpectedly domestic Paris behind avenue de Clichy.
Tip: Walk quietly, stay on the central lane and respect any posted access restrictions.
Square des Épinettes
Mature trees and neighbourhood benches make this small park a natural pause between hidden streets.
Tip: Use the park only during posted opening hours; the route can continue around it if closed.
Église Saint-Michel des Batignolles
The brick church and its slender tower mark the centre of a district rarely explored by first-time visitors.
Tip: The exterior is the walk's reference point; interior access is optional.
Montmartre Cemetery
Set below street level, this wooded cemetery gathers artists and writers beneath the unusual span of rue Caulaincourt.
Tip: Check the official closing time and leave enough time to exit without rushing.
Villa des Arts
An artists' residence hides behind an ornate entrance on the quieter western side of the hill.
Tip: Admire the entrance from public space unless an announced visit explicitly permits access.
Villa Léandre
A short cul-de-sac of picturesque houses feels closer to a garden suburb than central Paris.
Tip: It is residential, so keep the photo stop brief and unobtrusive.
Avenue Junot
Finish among elegant twentieth-century façades and traces of the artists who reshaped this side of Montmartre.
Tip: Continue independently toward Lamarck-Caulaincourt or descend back toward Place de Clichy.
